The patent Apparatus and system for optometric measurements and method for adjusting the optical power of an adjustable lens, inventors Carlos Dorronsoro and Víctor Rodríguez from the CSIC Institute of Optics, received a mention in the Young Patent award of the Second Edition of the Awards for the Best Invention Protected by Industrial Property Rights by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) in 2023.
The patent protects an innovative and disruptive technology that allows estimating a person’s visual graduation faster and more accurately than the traditional method of identifying letters through different lenses.

“The new method uses a test of blue and red colors and an optoadjustable lens to induce rapid changes in defocus, which produce a perception of flickering of the test, blinking one color more than another depending on the graduation of the patient, and the amount of blink will be minimal at the best graduation”, says Víctor Rodríguez, a researcher at the CSIC’s Institute of Optics, co-inventor of the patent and winner of the prize. “We have shown in 25 volunteer subjects that the method is 5 times faster and 2 times more accurate than the traditional method, which indicates the great clinical potential of this method and the benefits it can bring to both patients and clinicians,” he adds. Victor. “Our goal is to bring this technology to the market, after validation in a larger population. Receiving this award is a great recognition and motivates us to continue working hard and achieve our goal of transferring this new and disruptive method to society.”
